Supporting Parents and Families Through the Parenting Journey
Tania Lewis, Professional Expertise
I am a parent of two teenagers and have experienced first hand the challenges and frustrations of each age and stage. Parenting is one of the most difficult jobs there is and most of us begin this journey without any formal training. In our current social environment very few people talk about the struggles and isolation associated with being a parent. Everyone else seems to have an easier time. Their Facebook and Instagram posts say so, no?
As a social worker with more than 22 years experience helping a diverse population of children, adolescents, parents and families at the Toronto District School Board, I have worked extensively with those affected by:
My areas of expertise include mental health counselling, crisis intervention, parent-child conflict, parent coaching and education. I use a variety of counselling frameworks and am always practical in my approach to helping others. I also take a client-centred, strengths-based approach and place high value on building strong relationships with my clients. Therapies I draw from include Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.Ed) from McGill University and received my Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York City. I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and I am a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. I adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics and all policies of my profession to ensure a high standard of practice and accountability.
When I am not working, I enjoy swimming, traveling, listening to music, and playing ice hockey.
